Fire Alarm Systems

At KDS Fire & Security, we make sure every customer chooses the fire alarm system that best suits their needs. Our depth of industry experience helps you make the right choice.

Compliance and responsibility

Whether conventional, addressable or wireless, your fire alarm must be maintained to comply with the Irish fire standard IS 3218:2013, which requires on-site testing up to four times a year.

Under IS 3218, the “Responsible Person” is whoever controls the building – the occupier or someone they delegate to manage the fire alarm system and procedures.

We design, install and commission all our fire alarm systems to IS 3218:2013.

Conventional fire alarm systems

Conventional systems are typically used in small retail units and medium-sized buildings and are an affordable way to detect fire and smoke.

Detectors are grouped into zones. When a detector activates, the control panel shows which zone triggered, giving you or the fire brigade an indication of where to look.

We can integrate conventional systems with other fire panels on your site, or install communication devices monitored by G4S so the emergency services respond quickly.

Addressable fire alarm systems

Addressable systems are the more advanced option, operating with precision in large buildings such as apartment blocks and major commercial or industrial premises. They are now far more cost-effective than they once were, and are:

  • Cheaper to cable
  • Easier to operate
  • More accurate at pinpointing the location of a fire

Every detector has its own unique address, so the system shows exactly which device has activated. Many addressable systems can also send alerts to pagers carried by security and maintenance staff.

Open protocol vs closed protocol

When choosing a fire alarm, also consider flexibility for future integration, support and maintenance.

A protocol is the language devices use to talk to each other. Closed-protocol manufacturers make equipment that only works properly within their own product range, so adding another manufacturer’s equipment can cause problems. Open-protocol products are designed to integrate seamlessly with other manufacturers’ systems.

We strongly recommend open-protocol products, so you keep a free choice of service provider and compatible equipment.
