The security industry in Ireland is tightly regulated, and rightly so. Without regulation it would be easy for unscrupulous operators to undermine your security, whether through negligence or intent. The standards below exist to protect you, and KDS Fire & Security is fully accredited under all of them.
If you have any doubt about the credentials of a company or individual offering security services, the information here and the links to the regulators will help you ask the right questions. Contact us for straightforward, professional advice on industry regulation and best practice.
I.S. EN 50131 – intruder alarm systems
Intruder alarm installers in Ireland are certified against Irish Standard I.S. EN 50131-1:2006, “Alarm Systems – Intrusion Systems”, by an independent certification body. Installers who apply are assessed by inspectors, who evaluate their operations and procedures and inspect a sample of their installations against the standard. Any non-compliance must be corrected, and the corrective action is reviewed before certification is granted.
Certified installers’ details are passed to An Garda Síochána, who will then respond to activations from monitored installations, and to the insurance industry, which generally offers favourable rates for certified installations.
Certified installers are continuously monitored, with a proportion of installations inspected on an ongoing basis. Any installer whose work regularly falls below the standard can have their certification revoked.
Every certified installation comes with a Completion Certificate. The original goes to the client, a copy goes to the premises’ insurer and, for monitored systems, a further copy goes to the monitoring centre so that the Gardaí can respond to activations.
KDS Fire & Security is certified by Stellar Certification for the installation and maintenance of intruder alarm systems to I.S. EN 50131-1:2006.
The Private Security Authority
The Private Security Authority (PSA) was established under the Private Security Services Act 2004 as the statutory body responsible for regulating and licensing the Irish private security industry. Its core objective is to improve and maintain standards in the provision of security services.
It is an offence to provide, or offer to provide, a security service without a PSA licence, and it is also an offence to employ an unlicensed security operator. Penalties range from fines to imprisonment.
KDS Fire & Security holds PSA Licence No. 10455.
